When you have problems with and decide to rebuild your starter clutch, make sure you check the inside surfaces of the clutch housing. The areas where the rollers sit get chewed up as well. I failed to do that 3 years ago when I rebuilt mine and guess what? The rough surfaces of the housing trashed the new rollers and gear. $222 later I have a clutch that works. What I failed to act on was I started having occasional clutch slippage about 18 months after the rebuild and failed to do anything about it. If I were to do it over again, I would buy new rollers, springs, housing and gear and have the peace of mind that everything would be good for 40,000 miles.
